01What does a SonicWall need besides the appliance?
A security subscription, or the inspection features stay off. Without one you have a capable router and a stateful firewall, but no gateway antivirus, intrusion prevention or content filtering. TotalSecure bundles those with support; Advanced adds Capture ATP sandboxing.
02What is a High Availability unit, and do I need one?
It is a second appliance that takes over automatically if the first fails. It costs less than a standalone because it only works paired with a matching primary that holds the licences — so it is the wrong purchase unless you already own the same model. We flag these on the product page.
03Why are some appliances listed as Secure Upgrade?
That is a trade-in price for replacing an older SonicWall you already own. It is cheaper than buying outright and is not a valid purchase if you are starting fresh.
04TZ or NSa?
Throughput with deep packet inspection enabled, not the headline firewall figure — inspection is where these slow down. A TZ suits a single site with modest bandwidth; an NSa suits higher throughput, more concurrent users or multiple sites terminating VPNs.
05Can the firewall manage the switches and access points?
Yes, and it is the reason to buy the range together. SonicWave access points and SWS switches are managed from the firewall itself, so one policy set covers the edge, the port and the SSID without a separate controller.
